Wingham has had a settlement since the Stone Age but became firmly established in Roman times. Many of the buildings date back to the 13th Century and visitors will appreciate the historical feel to the village which includes two excellent pubs, an Indian restaurant, two vibrant village shops and a delicious bakery selling freshly baked breads and pastries.
In the middle of the High Street sits Chestnut House, a classic Grade II listed property which boasts a framed original document, showing its first sale on 1st June 1553 for the grand total of £12!!
It is not an exaggeration to say that this property is like a fine vintage wine. It needs to be savoured, not rushed, and is for the more discerning visitor.
On entering there is a large airy hallway with a music room/sitting room off to the right. You will immediately notice the owners love of music with the grand piano and music stands. Comfortable sofas sit around a grand fireplace with a large working wood burner. The music room leads through to a cosy snug/TV room again with a wood burner. Further on is a downstairs double bedroom with a small courtyard off and stairs leading up to a “Jack & Jill” bathroom.
To the left off the hallway is a quiet study where you can shut yourself away for those business calls. Worth noting is the hotel quality wi fi throughout the house.
At the end of the hall is the dining room with a large extending table for up to 10 people, an open fully equipped kitchen with 5 burner range cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave.
If you prefer al fresco dining there is a terrace with table and chairs for 8 people, leading on to the rear garden. For those who enjoy cooking there are herbs and spices planted and the owners encourage you to use them.
Upstairs to the first floor there are 3 double bedrooms, one with a “Jack & Jill” bathroom and the others sharing a family bathroom with bath and shower.
Winding stairs lead up to the second floor where there is a large attractive double bedroom with its own bathroom and shower.
Chestnut House is a family home and has been lovingly restored by its owners over the years. They would like to share its history and comfort with likeminded guests who may want a long weekend away, or a week exploring the surrounding area including the historical city of Canterbury or the medieval town of Sandwich.
The house has flexible rent options: Five bedrooms (10 people) with 3 bathrooms. Three bedrooms (6 people) with 2 bathrooms. Two bedrooms with 2 bathrooms (4 people).
